On his turn he plays a card that allows him to move and attack with a set number of units from each section of the board. Some command cards allow for special actions and attacks, however. Players then move their units usually three plastic pieces grouped together, representing that unit’s strengthand attack opposing units.
Rolling dice, units score hits depending upon the symbols that come up. The symbols can also force enemy units to retreat or trigger special abilities. Dice rolls can also produce lore tokens, which can be used to activate lore cards and different times in the game. Lore cards give units yet more special abilities, and really add some deeper variety to the contest.
Scenarios are not simply printed in the rule book for easy setup.
Rather, each player randomly selects half of a scenario setup, then the two halves are put together, creating unique and interesting terrain features with each game. Also, there is a squad building mechanic to scenario setup, where players select smaller cards representing their units, as well as several decoy cards, and place them throughout their side of the board before each player simultaneously reveals them.
It adds a fun fog of war dimension to the game and again ensures that no two scenarios will play exactly the same. At times the game does seem a bit more complicated that it needs to be, especially compared with its older cousin “Memoir ’44,” which offers many of the same dynamics as “BattleLore,” but in a far simpler and more straight forward way. Generally speaking, “BattleLore”‘s relative complexity is not a bad thing, though it can slow down the action from time to time during each player’s bookkeeping phase.
Adding to a player’s analysis paralysis is the fact that each lore card has a unique timing mechanism that means you really must consult and consider how to play the cards frequently.
These, of course, are just my own views and are minor points in what is generally a really fun game. Just may take a few plays to catch on. Battlelore 2nd edition delivers on the following: Although they are few: The added Lore mechanic doesn’t help this. Which may or may not bug you. This old school gamer says go for it if you’re at all curious. I doubt you’ll regret it. Great skirmish game where the minis represent hit points of your unit in this hex based combat system.
The game presents you with order cards that limit which areas or units you can choose from in a given turn.
Dice combat is chancy but lore cards or smart unit maneuvers can turn the tide in your favor. Decent amount of replayability with the customizable army and objective cards to choose from. Maps and army setup does take some time until you get used to the system but then each turn plays fast. Great components as always from FFG with more expansions to come. I wish there was a way to play with 4 players but I understand why that would be practically impossible. Once you start playing, the game itself doesn’t take too long, maybe 45 minutes.
You’ll spend about the same amount of time setting up, choosing your armies, and choosing your scenario But the strategy and combat is what makes this game fun.
My son and I played the learning scenario and had fun with it that we continued into a complete scenario and already created fun memories after just one game. It’s a fun war game for two players and takes about 2 hours per game. If you’re not into the fantasy theme, and prefer a more real war theme, Memoir ’44 or Command and Colors would be a better choice.
However, if you’re like me, this theme is a lot cooler. You basically deploy units and duke it out over different types of terrain, depending on which scenario you choose.
The lore cards add some nice flavor to the game, carde you to use magic to boost your attacks, navigate the map faster, or even mess with your opponent’s turn. Overall, a solid edition to my board game collection, and I definitely recommend it if war games and a fantasy theme appeal to you. See all 52 reviews. Customers also shopped for.
