I’m not trying to say that I simply didn’t like them or that they were horrible characters; I mean that if I knew jenzaburo people in real life, I would likely be kenzaburro prison because every single one of them are deserving of some righteous act of God that is reserved for the lowest and most inhumane members of society.

Because the book deals with feelings such as these it is not a light read; we get to know Bird in all his pain and insecurities, and the vivid writing makes his reality palpable and quite uncomfortable for the reader. Plenty of ‘shocking’ scenes occur, but for Kenzaburo Oe this novel is almost chaste in its depictions of perversity and violence. Author does try to let loose his characters at some point of time in the book and it seems these characters have their own destiny and are controlled by it.
